I met David Haynes at a writers meeting a loooong time ago. He’s charming young man, and a remarkable writer. Then this past year I came across a saying attributed to him that I fall back on a lot. “Punctuation is an art, not a science.” As a writer and an editor I treasure that remark. And I use it frequently when discussing the art of punctuation with fellow writers. It means I almost always get to win the argument. So thank you David, for that brilliant insight. Everything he says regarding the realities of publishing is so true! I like to say writers are inventors, and after they’ve invented this great new product…they have to get out and sell it. They cannot expect the world to discover their invention on the shelf among a million other inventions. It’s not fun…but it’s a big (and critical) part of the game.
